10 things to do in Cornwall on the May Bank Holiday without waves

Cornwall is experiencing the longest flat period of surf for the year so far, so here are some ideas for keeping you occupied over the May Bank Holiday

1. SAS Beach Clean

Get yourself down to Porthtowan beach this Saturday for the SAS Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project. After the long blustery winter this beautiful beach needs a bit of TLC. The beach clean will run from 2pm to 4pm and as a thanks, all volunteers will be treated to a free glass of Barefoot Wine or soft drink, a T-shirt and the chance to win SAS and Barefoot prizes.

2. Go for a paddle

What's stopping you from still getting in the sea for a paddle? Exercise releases good hormones called endorphins that make us feel good and boost self-esteem. The NHS recommends that we do at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week. Paddling is not only great for surfing by strengthening the shoulder and back but it also adds to cardiovascular fitness. It's also a great way to spend time outdoors and enjoy the ocean and natural environment.

3.Go for a stroll on the coastal path

Fancy viewing some of the area on foot? The South West coastal path is one of the most scenic walks in the world. From jagged cliffs to sheltered coves, the coastline showcases some of Cornwall's natural beauty and there are miles of it to explore.

4. BBQ on the beach

What's a better social activity than having a BBQ on the beach? Go down to your local supermarket and pick up some yummie BBQ treats, remove the cobwebs from your BBQ and call your mates. You may need to wrap up warm though as it's not looking like summers on it's way any time soon.
P.S Don't forget to take your rubbish home with you.

5. Go for a cycle ride

Cornwall has so many options for bike lovers. Tracks range from the historic Clay Trails surrounding the St Austell area, the beautiful Cornish countryside along The Camel Trail or for those who still want to involve the ocean there's the coast to coast mining trail.

6. Pie & Ale Festival

Go to Cubet's Smugglers Den annual pie & ale festival. The festival starts on Friday 4th May 2012 and runs through the weekend until Monday. The weekend will involve lots of ale, cider, pies and live music in their festival marquee. So if this sounds like your kind of thing get there quick before stock levels in their cellar run low.

 8. Extreme hot chocolate at Watergate Bay

Go for a revitalising walk along the beach at Watergate bay followed by an Extreme hot chocolate at The Beach Hut. The Beach Hut is known as one of Cornwall’s best beach-side hang-outs and their Extreme hot chocolates will make any one feel good.

10.Baking

If the weather really isn't drawing you outdoors and you fancy getting creative, why not try baking. Find a new recipe in a cook book that you have always wanted to give a go. Here's a favourite which is even better when served warm for breakfast:

Banana Bread:

15g butter (softened)

175g muscovado sugar

2 large free range eggs (from your local farm) beaten

3 very ripe banana

225g self-raising flour

tsp ground mixed spice

1. Preheat the oven to 180c/350f/Gas 4

Generously grease a 900g/2lb loaf tin and line it with non-stick baking paper. Cream the butter and sugar in large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, beating after each addition, until well combined.

2. Peel and then mash the bananas with a ford. Add them to the creamed mixture and beat until well combined.

3. Sift the flour and mixed spice together and fold into the banana mixture. Spoon into the tin and level the surface.

4. Bake for 1 - 1:15 hours or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes then transfer to wire rack. Lift off the tin and then peel off the baking paper.

Enjoy warm or cooled.
